One person has died following a crash in central Alberta early Saturday morning.

Sylvan Lake RCMP say it was around 4:30 a.m. when members were patrolling Hwy 11A and assisting Red Deer detachment in hopes of locating a vehicle involved in a serious incident in the city.

A member from Sylvan Lake encountered another unrelated vehicle westbound on 11A travelling across the centre line and without headlights. The officer was able to avoid a collision with that vehicle and then decided to pursue.

The vehicle failed to stop and a short time later left the road and collided with a power pole.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and found deceased nearby.

A passenger who was trapped inside the vehicle had to be extricated and was taken to Red Deer Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe alcohol, speed, and manner of driving are all factors which led to the collision.

Police are not identifying the deceased pending next of kin notification. The investigation is ongoing.
