International Day of Persons with Disabilities to be recognized in Red Deer

Nov 30, 2018 | 1:10 PM

Local recognition of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is happening this Sunday.

Although the day is widely recognized on Dec. 3, a celebration and awareness event is happening this Sunday (Dec. 2) at the Sheraton.

Dawne Hammerschmidt, event organizer and board member with the Red Deer Inclusion and Accessibility Network, says accessibility is more than just a physical thing.

“All areas could use improvement in every city, nothing is perfect, and we do have a good system,” she says. “We have decent curb cuts here, for example, but accessibility impacts so many people, even with unemployment. Or people who don’t shovel their snow, for anyone in a wheelchair or a walker, that impacts them a great deal.”

She adds that many who live with cognitive delays do so in or near poverty, which puts them further at risk of being alienated from the rest of society.

“Right now, because a lot of the old downtown area isn’t really accessible, it’d need a huge upgrade, and that’s not fair to put on businesses. But with the Capstone project coming up, we were kind of hoping to have conversations with whomever that builder is,” Hammerschmidt continues.

“That’s just to help them think about how people can stay in their houses longer by having something simple like bedrooms on the main floor, or just having those conversations with people who are going to be building houses so that accessibility is at the forefront of building design.”

Hammerschmidt also says there are currently early-stage discussions going on to implement a grading system so that downtown businesses can display signage so that people know whether or not a location is inclusive for wheelchair users or for those who need a toilet.

Sunday’s event will also honour a number of locals for their commitment to ensuring accessibility, and there will be a speech from Ann Nicol, member of the Premier’s Council of the Status of Persons with Disabilities.

Registration is free, but RSVP is required. To do so, email barrierfree@outlook.com.

The event is being co-hosted by the Capabilities Connection of Central Alberta Association.
