Positive dialogue heard for Sylvan Lake skate park issues

Community members in Sylvan Lake appear set to switch directions on consternation around certain behaviour at the local skate park.

A brainstorm session held last Tuesday brought together about 40 people to discuss concerns raised around bullying, offensive music and underage drinking and smoking at the public facility.

Communications Officer Joanne Gaudet says it was a constructive conversation between adults and many from the under 18 crowd.

“It was a really positive experience for everybody. It was good and open dialogue. We were kind of happy to learn that illegal activity is not as prevalent as the garbage or the poor language,” she says. “Bullying was identified and the intimidation and offensive music, but it was really interesting to see how much people were more concerned with the garbage.”

Twenty-seven people completed surveys at the meeting and others have been left at Timber Coffee and Incline Industries if others wish to give feedback by Monday.

Gaudet says several potential solutions were identified, though a report will have to come to council for consideration before anything is implemented.

Some of the ideas suggested include requiring park users eight and younger to have adult supervision, only allowing music through the Town’s speakers and for a fee, implementing a fee to use the park, and having the park close at a certain hour.

There was also a lot of support for increased programming and events at the park, as well as preventative programming focusing on anti-bullying and mentoring.
