Education Minister apologizes for question about positive effect of residential schools
Alberta Education Minister David Eggen says he is appalled after seeing hurtful and offensive material about residential schools that was given to a student.
An outraged student posted a photo of an online social studies multiple choice question that asked about the “positive effect” of residential schools — with answers that included children became civilized and children were away from home.
The superintendent of the St. Paul Education Regional Division says the questionnaire was created by the Alberta Distance Learning Centre.
Eggen says he apologizes and has told Alberta Education to review material used by the learning centre to make sure it is no longer used.
