Classic cars cruisin’ through Red Deer this weekend

Aug 2, 2018 | 5:02 PM

It’s shaping up to be a great weekend for classic car lovers in central Alberta.

Rock’ n Red Deer’ is gearing up once again and features the cars, music and culture of the 50s 60s and 70s.

Stu Sheppard, President of the Alberta Super Run Association, says the event is essentially about keeping those decades alive.

“Things like sock-hops and car shows,” he explains. “We have young guns participants and have kept young people involved.”

He says some early bird cruisin’ however will take place in downtown Red Deer Friday night in advance of the main events on Saturday and Sunday.

“It’s the big, big cruise for the public,” states Sheppard. “It starts at 6:00 p.m. and goes until 10:00 p.m. It will be very busy down there so if anybody is thinking about going down there, they should be going early!”

Although the number of vehicles registered for this year’s Rock’ n Red Deer event are down slightly according to Sheppard, he says there’s still up to  750 classic cars taking part.

“We started back in Red Deer in 1996 with a bunch of people and a bunch of car clubs from around central Alberta, Edmonton, Calgary and St. Albert and all over the place, including Red Deer,” recalls Sheppard. “We did our first show in 1998 and we’ve had participants from California, lots from down east, a majority from B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.”

Sheppard says there will also be roughly 60 automotive-related vendors on site for the main events on Saturday and Sunday.

“They will be selling anything from wheels, to t-shirts, to lots of automotive paraphernalia stuff,” adds Sheppard. “Of course we do have the beer gardens on site which the Westerner is putting on. Doors open for the public at around 10:00 a.m. and they go until 4 o’clock. Admission is $10 a head.”

Sheppard points out the Alberta Super Run Association is a non-profit organization that puts on this event strictly through the efforts of volunteers.

He thanks First Choice Collision for being title sponsor of this year’s event.
