Fire restriction order now in effect for Red Deer County

Apr 30, 2026 | 12:42 PM

Red Deer County announced that a fire restriction order was officially put in place at noon on Thursday.

This means that the county will require that all outdoor fires burning within the County, whether set with permission or by permit, will remain valid for the duration of the permit.

In addition, all new outdoor fires within the boundaries of Red Deer County are prohibited, and no new fire permits will be issued until further notice.

However, the ban does not apply to fires contained within cooking and heating appliances that are fueled by fluids, gases, or wood pellets.

It also does not apply to fires contained within industrial facilities for operational purposes, acceptable residential fire pits, approved gas or propane-fueled fire pits, and catalytic or infrared-style heaters.

The County says that acceptable residential fire pits need to be:

  • A minimum of three metres clearance measured from the nearest fireplace edge to the nearest edge of buildings, property lines, or other combustible material;
  • A height not exceeding 0.6 metres when measured from the surrounding grade to the top of the pit opening;
  • Equipped with a mesh screen with an opening no larger than 13mm
  • Enclosed sides made from bricks, concrete blocks, heavy gauge metal, or other non-combustible materials; and
  • Not located over any underground utilities or under aboveground wires.

Red Deer County added that any person violating conditions of this ban may be held liable for any damages and/or costs associated with extinguishing the fire and full prosecution with penalties, in accordance with Red Deer County Fire Services Bylaw 2012/14 and/or the Forest Prairie Protection Act RSA.
