Steps for Life Charity Walk set for May 3 in Red Deer

The 2026 Steps for Life Charity Walk in honour of the victims of workplace tragedy is just days away.

On Saturday, May 2, central Albertans will unite at Bower Ponds Main Stage to take part in the fundraiser put on by Threads of Life.

Registration opens at 9:30 a.m. with opening remarks set for 11 a.m., followed by a five-kilometre fundraising walk.

So far, those taking part in the walk in Red Deer have raised just over $14,000, which is 74 per cent of the way to their goal.

The event aims to raise awareness and funds for families and individuals affected by life-altering workplace injuries, illnesses, or death.

Around 35 communities from across Canada will put on their own event, including nine in Alberta. Airdrie will hold an event on May 9, Calgary on May 3, Edmonton on May 2, Fort McMurray on May 2, Lethbridge on May 2, Medicine Hat on May 2, Grande Prairie on May 2, and Slave Lake on May 1.

Nationally, the event has raised $887,514 so far with a goal of $975,000.

According to the Steps for Life website, three workers in Canada will die on the job on average each day, and thousands are injured.
