Red Deer RCMP say they responded to an incident involving a youth who was hit by a school bus on Friday morning.

Red Deer RCMP Public Information Officer Cst. Sandra Geiger said that at 8:33 a.m., a youth was riding his bicycle along 55 Street when a school bus attempted to pull out of a parking lot.

The youth and the school bus driver were waiting to see who would go first, but they proceeded at the same time.

“They both tried to go at the same time, and he was bumped on his bike,” Geiger said.

Cst. Geiger added that the youth was assessed on scene and had minimal injuries. No charges have been laid.

In a statement from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, they explained it was one of their buses that was involved in an accident with a pedestrian riding a bicycle near École Camille J. Lerouge School.

Red Deer Emergency Services were immediately called and provided medical assistance to the cyclist.

They also confirmed that the driver of the bus is safe and that there were no students on the bus at the time of the collision.

“Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools is cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident,” they wrote in the statement.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority. The École Camille J. Lerouge School counsellor has been deployed and is currently working to provide emotional support and resources to any students or staff members who may require assistance. Out of respect for the privacy of the individual involved and the ongoing investigation, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools will not be providing further comment at this time.”
