Red Deer area getting nearly $45 million for two continuing care projects

Apr 30, 2026 | 2:21 PM

Two continuing care projects in Red Deer and Red Deer County are among those to receive provincial dollars towards completion.

The Government of Alberta shared Wednesday that it is investing $400 million to deliver more than 1,100 new continuing care spaces. That includes 113 spaces between the two local projects.

Those include $40.5 million for the Evergreen Care Village project, and $4.4 million for the Optima Living: Hamlets at Red Deer expansion project in Gasoline Alley.

Nine other projects are receiving funding, including in Calgary, Edmonton, Cochrane, Leduc, and Wetaskiwin.

“Albertans deserve to age with dignity in the communities they call home,” says Jason Nixon, minister of assisted living and social services.

“By expanding continuing care capacity across Alberta, we are creating more spaces, more support, and more peace of mind for seniors and families while building a stronger, more sustainable care system for generations to come.”

According to the province, Alberta is home to 865,000 seniors, and that number is growing, they add, at an unprecedented pace.

They estimate that specific population will have grown to over one million in less than 10 years.

There are currently about 30,000 provincially subsidized continuing care home spaces in Alberta, plus 2,200 under construction, and the 1,100 announced today.
