Red Deer sees 14 cannabis retail development applications

Aug 1, 2018 | 4:36 PM

Fourteen prospective cannabis retailers have applied to set up shop in Red Deer.

Erin Stuart, Inspections and Licensing Manager for The City of Red Deer, says 11 them came on the first day applications were accepted last Tuesday, July 24.

“I think we were well-prepared for that response and I think it went really well last week when we started to take the applications,” Stuart said Wednesday. “We estimated the ability to have 35 locations knowing that those likely wouldn’t all go. So I think we did anticipate the numbers to be around the 14 or 15 mark.”

Stuart says that for the most part the applicants were very well organized and prepared when last Tuesday came around. Several applicants had been camped outside of City Hall up to four days ahead of time. Those who submitted properly filled out paperwork have been sent a letter by the City.

“From here, what will be required is either a decision from our Development Officer, or if there’s a variance required the application will go to the Municipal Planning Commission for approval.”

Any decisions handled by the Development Officers should be completed by the end of August, Stuart notes, while those requiring MPC approval will likely happen in the first week of September.

Approved retail store will not be allowed to open for business until cannabis becomes legal in Canada, which is currently scheduled for October 17.
