Red Deer: Olympic city?

Feb 27, 2018 | 7:41 AM

Close your eyes — now imagine biathletes racing on the brand new set up at River Bend, or short track speed skaters dashing around the Enmax Centrium.

Now imagine they are battling for Olympic gold at those venues, right here in Red Deer.

Word out of Calgary city council in recent weeks is that there have been preliminary talks with The City of Edmonton to potentially share some Winter Olympic events should The City of Calgary move forward with an official bid for the 2026 Games.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi was in PyeongChang, South Korea last week to observe the ongoing Winter Olympics. Meanwhile there are calls for Calgarians to vote in a plebiscite on the matter ahead of the bid deadline this October.

With Red Deer’s hot streak of hosting major sporting events like the Memorial Cup and Canada Winter Games in mind, rdnewsNOW asked Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer if our city could hypothetically play a role if the Olympics came back to Alberta.

“It would depend on the terms and conditions and based on our community’s capacity to mobilize around it. I certainly think that we would have a duty to responsibly explore the opportunity if Calgary did formally approach us,” which Veer adds hasn’t happened.

“As a central city and corridor city, I would fully expect they would be approaching Red Deer if that was an area of interest for them.”

Veer also says the momentum Red Deer has garnered, as well as interest from fellow Canadians about what’s going on here has been incredible.

“Obviously Red Deer is proving itself in terms of our national and international abilities to host major sport events, so I think our community would certainly be open to that conversation,” she says.

“I think Red Deer would stand a very good chance if Calgary wanted to explore that.”
