Smile Cookie campaign returns to Red Deer, central Alberta next week

Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign returns in Red Deer and in municipalities across central Alberta next week.

From April 27 to May 3, Tim Hortons restaurants in Red Deer will offer smile cookies in support of Reading College.

The proceeds from this year’s campaign will benefit the summer program put on by the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools

Reading College is a life-changing literacy program for Grade 2 students that helps improve reading skills and build confidence.

“Reading is the foundation for success in school and in life,” said Chad Erickson, superintendent of Red Deer Public Schools, in a media release. “Through Reading College, students not only improve their literacy skills, they develop confidence and a genuine enjoyment of reading. Last summer, 72 students completed the program feeling more engaged, capable and ready for what comes next.”

Smile Cookies in Red Deer are available for $2 each.

Last year’s campaign sold approximately 40,000 cookies and raised $80,773 for Reading College.

“The Smile Cookie campaign is a powerful way to support literacy right here in our community,” said Kristine Plastow, Board Chair of the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools. “Programs like Reading College depend on partnerships like this. Whether you buy one cookie or a dozen, you are making a difference.”

“We’re proud to support Reading College, a program that helps kids succeed,” said local Tim Hortons restaurant owner Tanya Doucette. “We are grateful to our guests for every cookie they purchase, and to our team members for all their hard work making Smile Cookies happen. Together, we’re helping create opportunities for students in Red Deer.”

Smile Cookie Day on May 2

Red Deer Public Schools is inviting the community to take part in Smile Cookie Day on May 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Tim Hortons on Thomlison Avenue in Red Deer.

It is a fun, free family event in partnership with Red Deer Emergency Services, Red Deer RCMP, and Alberta Sheriffs.

In previous years, kids in attendance got to climb aboard a fire truck or police car, meet local emergency responders, and enjoy a delicious smile cookie. Science teacher Jason Zackowski will also lead a hands-on demonstration for kids.

“This event brings people together in such a positive way,” Plastow added. “We’re excited to celebrate with the community.”
