MADD hosting Candlelight Vigil of Remembrance and Hope in Red Deer

Nov 16, 2017 | 9:40 AM

The local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is marking two significant milestones this month.

They include the 30th anniversary of the organization’s Red Ribbon Awareness Campaign which started November 1 and runs until January 8, 2018, and the 25th annual Candlelight Vigil of Remembrance and Hope taking place in Red Deer November 18. It will be at St. Luke’s Anglican Church starting at 7:30 p.m.

Marilyn Rinas, President of MADD – Red Deer and District Chapter, says Saturday night’s vigil is open to everyone but geared towards people who have been affected by drunk drivers.

“They can either share their pictures of their loved ones that they’ve lost and or light candles. The candles are escorted up with a police officer to the front and they are able to light a candle in memory of their lost loved one” added Rinas.

The Red Ribbon Awareness Campaign was started to help promote sober driving, not only during the holiday season but year-round. The red ribbon serves as a powerful symbol and tribute to the innocent people killed or injured in impairment-related crashes each year in Canada.

Over the years, the campaign has grown from a single event in its first year, to a nation-wide effort involving thousands of volunteers distributing millions of red ribbons to the public to tie onto vehicles, key chains, purses and backpacks as a commitment to safe and sober driving. To mark the 30th anniversary of this campaign, car decals featuring the phrase “drive sober” will also be made available.

MADD Canada’s red ribbons are available through the MADD Canada website, Chapter and Community Leaders, AllState Canada offices or participating sponsor outlets.

Anyone wishing to support the Red Ribbon Awareness Campaign with a donation, can do so through the MADD Canada website, by calling 1-800-665-6233 or by texting “RIBBON” to 45678. A one-time ten dollar donation will be added to the donor’s cell phone bill and payable to his or her service provider.
