Red Deer Public Schools facing $1.5M deficit this year

Red Deer Public Schools is on track to post a deficit this year of $1.5 million.

Trustees heard an update during their most recent meeting that the division which noted total revenues of $124,878,317 for the 2018-19 school year and total expenses of $126,383,369, resulting in a projected deficit of $1,505,052 for this year.

Officials say the deficit is being supported by $700,000 in operating surplus funds from last year that will be allocated to support staffing needs in schools across the district.

Trustees were also presented with the Annual Education Results Report for the 2017-18 school year.

The report focuses on the district’s three priority areas of literacy and numeracy, equity and student success and completion.

Trustees were pleases to see significant and important accomplishments within the report and a solid focus on being responsive to the needs of students.
