Rebels sweep road swing with win over Hurricanes

Jan 18, 2019 | 9:02 PM

You can make it four straight wins overall and four consecutive on the road for the Red Deer Rebels.

Since embarking on a trip last week that did see the team stop back at home for practice, the Rebels have defeated Swift Current, Brandon, Regina, and now Lethbridge 3-1 on Friday night.

With the win, Red Deer improves to 26-13-2 and leapfrogs both the Hurricanes and the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Central Division standings. Edmonton now leads with 56 points, with Red Deer one behind, and Lethbridge and Medicine Hat two points back.

On Friday, Red Deer’s Jeff de Wit was sprung on a breakaway by the team’s leading scorer Brandon Hagel before roofing his 23rd past Liam Hughes to make it 1-0. That goal came with just 33 seconds left in the first period.

In the second, Canes standout Jordy Bellerive notched his 23rd of the season at 13:18 to equalize.

Before the period was out, Chris Douglas regained the lead for Red Deer, scoring his 12th while on the powerplay at 17:29. It would stand up to be the game-winner.

With 27 seconds left in regulation, Cameron Hausinger iced it by putting his 15th into the empty net as the Rebels hung on for the win against their divisional rival.

In the win, Rebels goaltender Ethan Anders made 35 saves for his 22nd win of the season.

With two assists on the night, Brandon Hagel now has 42 helpers to go with 26 goals for 68 points in 41 games played. That is good for 5th best in the Western Hockey League, just four points and one spot ahead of Lethbridge Hurricane Nick Henry.

The Rebels are now 2-0-1 on the season against Lethbridge. The two play again Saturday night in the back half of this home and home series. They’ll play again Feb. 1 in Lethbridge and Mar. 15 in Red Deer.

Puck drop on Saturday is at 7 p.m. The broadcast can be heard LIVE on 106.7 The Drive starting at 6:30.
