Rebels win overtime thriller against Oil Kings

Nov 1, 2026 | 8:01 PM

The Edmonton Oil Kings goalie nearly stole the show, but the Red Deer Rebels defeated their Central Division rivals 3-2 in overtime.

On Sunday afternoon in Edmonton, Rebels captain Beckett Hamilton scored two goals, including the overtime winner, despite a 40-save effort by Oil Kings goalie Ethan Simcoe.

Meanwhile, Rebels netminder Nathan Salisbury saved 21 of 23 shots faced.

As a result, the Rebels are now tied for first in the Eastern Conference standings with a 10-4-1-1 record.

In the first period, the Oil Kings scored the lone opening-period goal off Olli Wahlroos’ stick near the midway point.

The Rebels answered with an equalizer in the second period from forward Poul Andersen, his 14th of the season. He continues to lead the league with 25 points.

Andersen’s tally was the result of a one-timer opportunity from the right circle off the feed from rookie Paxson Madill.

In the third period, the Oil Kings retook the lead less than a minute in with a goal from forward Kj Sauer.

Hamilton then tied it at two just under five and a half minutes in. He scored from a sharp angle on the left side of the net off a feed from Andersen.

In overtime, the Rebels cycled the puck around in the offensive zone until Hamilton got a high-quality look and buried it.

Next up, the Rebels will host the Kamloops Blazers on Tuesday, Nov. 3, before heading to Lethbridge on Friday to face the Hurricanes.
