As a result, the division will add five classroom complexity teams in classrooms, in addition to the established 12 teams in place since last spring.

The teams are designed to provide targeted support in schools and help teachers respond to diverse academic, behavioural, social-emotional and language-related needs.

Meanwhile, bridge classrooms, which will be in elementary schools and K-8 schools, will provide an inclusive model for students in Grades 1-3 who require specialized support. Each bridge classroom will include one certified teacher and two educational assistants and will support six to eight students.

“The classroom complexity teams are an important part of our commitment to ensuring students have the support they need to learn and thrive,” said Chad Erickson, Superintendent. “We know that students learn in different ways and that the needs within classrooms can vary. These teams will provide additional capacity for teachers and schools while helping students access the supports, strategies and accommodations that allow them to participate and reach their full potential.”

Red Deer Public Schools said the education plan calls for high-leverage instructional and assessment strategies to be identified, developed and implemented across the division.

Students will also continue to have opportunities to connect learning to their interests and future goals through language programs, fine arts, athletics, trades, robotics, mechanics, clubs and other programs. They will also continue to strengthen opportunities such as Work Experience, Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), Dual Credits and the Central Alberta Collegiate Institute.

This year there will also be continued efforts to create welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments, along with a comprehensive training program called WITS (Walk Away, Ignore, Talk It Out, Seek Help) that promotes healthy relationships, reduces conflict and enhances student well-being in elementary schools.

“Our education plan is grounded in the work of our teachers, support staff, administrators and families,” Erickson added. “Together, we are building a culture of respect, inclusion, caring and excellence where every student can succeed.”

This past June, the Board of Trustees held its organizational meeting, where Trustee Nicole Buchanan was elected Chair, and Trustee Nathan Davies was elected Vice Chair for the 2026-2027 school year.
