200 Red Deer Public educational assistants take in professional development

A couple of hundred educational assistants with Red Deer Public Schools took part in targeted professional development this week.

The school division says the learning was intended to sharpen skills and add new strategies to the EAs’ toolboxes, with the further goal of meeting the diverse needs ot students.

It was also offered in conjunction with Red Deer Polytechnic.

“Educational Assistants are an important part of our school teams, and investing in their professional learning is an investment in student success,” said Chris Good, Associate Superintendent of Student Services.

“This professional development is intentionally focused on the practical skills and strategies EAs can use every day. Whether it’s helping a student regulate, supporting communication, building literacy and numeracy skills or strengthening collaboration within a school team, we want our EAs to have the knowledge and confidence to support students effectively.”

Among the more than a dozen different session topics were student motivation, math anxiety, emotional regulation, neurodiversity, language development, communication, early literacy, positive behaviour guidance, and the roles and responsibilities of teachers and EAs.

“Every student deserves to feel supported, understood and able to participate in learning,” added Good.

“When we equip the adults working alongside students with strong, practical strategies, we strengthen the entire learning environment.”

Classes start Aug. 31.
