First Rider program to teach bus safety before new school year

Aug 1, 2026 | 8:00 AM

A number of events this month are aiming to help Central Alberta’s youngest students learn safety first, even before the new school year begins.

Children and their parents are invited to participate in the annual First Rider event, which introduces young children and their parents to school bus safety.

The First Rider event in August is free to attend and is based in four Central Alberta communities: Red Deer, Olds, Rocky Mountain House and Drayton Valley.

Organizers say the First Rider program has been successful each year since it began in 2009, giving young people a better understanding of safety just in time for school start-up.

Officials say this event is important for those taking the school bus for the first time. Parents and guardians, however, must accompany their child throughout this event.

Students will have the chance to:

  • Watch a Winnie the Pooh school bus safety video (Red Deer, Rocky Mountain House and Drayton Valley only)
  • Learn how to ride the bus safely when the bus is moving
  • Practice safely entering and exiting a school bus
  • Experience a short school bus ride
  • Participate in an emergency evacuation

Four school divisions are working together to run the event. Chinook’s Edge School Division, Red Deer Public Schools, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools and Wild Rose School Division, as well as Prairie Bus Lines, which will have coordinators and staff members at each location to help students and their parents.

First Rider will be offered from 3 to 7 p.m. on the following dates and locations:

Date: Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026 Location: Red Deer – St. Joseph High School

Date: Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026 Location: Olds – École Deer Meadow School

Date: Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026 Location: Rocky Mountain House – West Central High School – St. Dominic Catholic High School
