Surge of blood donors needed around Canada Day

With Canada Day upon us, Canadian Blood Services is putting out the call once again for an increase in donations.

According to the organization, 46 per cent of Canadians believe donating blood is a uniquely Canadian act of generosity.

More than 70 per cent believe it is one of the most meaningful ways people can give back, they add.

And the need is always on the rise around statutory holidays, due to several factors, including increases in alcohol consumption and injuries.

“A strong, healthy Canada depends on Canadians showing up for one another, yet only about two per cent of eligible people in Canada currently donate, while demand continues to grow,” officials say in a release.

“Canadian Blood Services is encouraging all eligible donors to help fill every donation chair and ensure a stable, self-reliant blood system for everyday care and unexpected emergencies.”

The busy summer season has also resulted in an increase in appointment cancellations. If you make an appointment, please try to keep it, the organization asks.

If you are unable to make it to your appointment, cancel it so they can find someone to take your place; then, consider rebooking as soon as possible.
