The Town of Ponoka celebrated the grand opening of Rodeo Drive following extensive improvements made between Highway 2A and 38 Street.

During the ceremony on Friday, the Minister of Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors, the Honourable Devin Dreeshen, and Town of Ponoka Mayor Kevin Ferguson spoke about the importance of the Rodeo Drive Corridor Improvement Project and the partnership between the provincial government and the town.

Dreeshen said it was an exciting day and gave credit to the mayor for his vision for the project.

“Even though this is a partnership between the provincial government and the Town of Ponoka, to see this come to fruition is just remarkable,” he said.

Dreeshen also credited the engineers and construction workers who finished it on time and on budget. The project had a budget of just over $8 million.

“I do think this will be that iconic picture when people drive into Ponoka and attend the Ponoka Stampede,” he said. “To see that this is a great example of the provincial and municipal governments working together to build an amazing facility for people.”

Some of the improvements and upgrades include pavement resurfacing and concrete repairs and upgrades to the 46 Street intersection, including new traffic lights, paving, concrete, lighting and realignment of that intersection.

There were also improvements made to the intersection at 45 Avenue, an expansion of the town’s multi-use trail network along Rodeo Drive with a new paved trail extending from Highway 2A to 46 Street, and stormwater infrastructure upgrades.

In addition, there is new upgraded streetlighting, fencing, landscaping, and wayfinding signage and the renaming of the roadway to Rodeo Drive.

Ferguson said at the ceremony that a lot of hands went into the making of Rodeo Drive, which he said began with town council.

“The purpose was to fix an aging piece of infrastructure, and the vision was to do more than just repair a road,” he said.

“One year ago, we had a sod-turning ceremony, and today we are cutting the ribbon. That’s beautiful… For all of our citizens and visitors, you can walk, ride, or drive from one side of town to the other more safely than you ever could before.”
