Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Red Deer and surrounding area

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Red Deer and the surrounding area.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, conditions are favourable today for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Officials say thunderstorms will persist into the evening, and the development of funnel clouds are also possible.

“When thunder roars, go indoors. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” ECCC says. “Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.”
