Red Deer Public Education Plan focuses on student success, career readiness and classroom supports

Red Deer Public Schools says it is investing in the future of its students through a new Three-Year Education Plan that emphasizes hands-on learning, expanded career pathways and stronger supports for increasingly complex classrooms.

Officials say the recently approved Three Year Education Plan outlines key priorities that will guide the Division’s work through to 2029 and help ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.

Approved by the Board last month, officials say the plan outlines priorities, strategies and performance measures aligned with Alberta Education’s Assurance Framework, while reflecting the values and aspirations of students, staff, families and the broader community.

Among the new and expanded initiatives said to be in the plan are a Middle School Volleyball Skills Academy, continued growth of the Fire Academy, enhanced career and trades programming, continued anti-bullying supports, Classroom Complexity Teams and increased professional learning to support curriculum implementation and restorative practices.

According to RDPSD, the Three Year Education Plan places a strong emphasis on preparing students for life beyond graduation through hands-on learning opportunities and partnerships with industry, community organizations and post-secondary institutions.

“We know families want opportunities that help students discover their passions, build skills and prepare for their futures,” said Nicole Buchanan, Board Chair, in a press release. “This plan strengthens those opportunities while ensuring every student feels supported, included and successful in their learning journey.”

Officials say a key focus over the next three years will be career readiness and experiential learning. The Division says it will establish a more consistent approach to off-campus educations, while increasing access to work experience, the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), dual credit opportunities and the Central Alberta Collegiate Institute. The plan is also said to include exploring the development of a Grade 6-12 Trades Academy.

Division officials say the Three Year Education Plan also responds directly to growing classroom complexity through targeted supports. This spring, officials say Red Deer Public implemented 12 Classroom Complexity Teams, which consists of 12 Certified Teachers and 24 Educational Assistants.

“This plan is about ensuring every student reaches their full potential,” said Chad Erickson, Superintendent. “Whether it’s through enhanced classroom supports, strong teaching and learning practices, expanded career pathways or improved specialized programs, our focus remains on helping students achieve success.”

According to RDPSD, additional priorities include implementing high-impact teaching practices across the Division, supporting teachers with new curriculum implementation, expanding restorative practices training for staff and continuing efforts to advance Indigenous student success and reconciliation through authentic learning experiences and partnerships.

Officials anticipate the Three Year Education Plan will drive decision-making, measure progress and ensure students continue to have access to high-quality teaching and learning opportunities over the next three years in Red Deer Public Schools.
