The Alberta High School Sports Hall of Fame has come calling for Kathy Lalor.

The longtime coach was named a 2026 Special Achievement inductee into the Hall of Fame, after 46 years with Red Deer Public Schools.

This includes the past 34 years at Lindsay Thurber, where she has coached basketball and track and field every year.

“I’m incredibly honoured,” Lalor said in a media release. “I’m grateful that people would recognize the time and effort I’ve put into something I’ve always cared deeply about.”

Lalor said she’s loved coaching from the very beginning and that it’s been a constant source of energy and purpose throughout her career.

“Getting to spend time with students who are motivated, who want to improve and are willing to put in the extra effort, that’s always been the best part of my day,” she said. “As a coach, you get just as much out of the experience as the students do.”

Lalor was raised in Delburne and credits two physical education teachers from her high school who were a source of inspiration. She said they were incredible role models.

“I loved school, but I especially admired the impact they had,” she added. “That really helped shape the direction I chose.”

In postsecondary studies, she attended Red Deer Polytechnic, where she played two years of basketball before transferring to the University of Alberta.

After graduating, she got her first teaching job at West Park Junior High School in 1980 and stayed for 12 years, where she also coached. She then moved to Lindsay Thurber High School.

She said the relationships built through sport have always been at the heart of the experience.

“One of the things I’ve always valued is the camaraderie that comes with being part of a team,” Lalor added. “Coaches build meaningful relationships with students and families, and that’s something I’ve always appreciated. It makes the experience special.

“Some of the most rewarding seasons have been with teams that really had to work for everything. When you see that level of commitment and growth, it’s incredibly fulfilling.”

The opportunity to coach her three daughters in both basketball and track and field, she said, are among her top highlights.

“That was really special,” she said. “It wasn’t just about my own kids, it was about being part of a larger group of their friends and teammates. Those are memories I’ll always value.”

Kathy said she’s also received a lot of support throughout her career.

“I’ve really appreciated the opportunities Red Deer Public Schools has given me to coach, and the support from administration along the way,” she said. “Coaching can be demanding, but it makes a difference when you’re surrounded by people who believe in the value of athletics in schools. I have been very fortunate.”
