Over 130 students in Grades 4-12 took part in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta’s (APEGA) Science Olympics in Red Deer.

Last Saturday at Eastview Middle School, the event, which was organized by APEGA’s central Alberta branch, allowed students to use critical thinking skills, problem-solving, and teamwork to solve mystery challenges based on real-world problems.

Engineer Malcolm Martinez, APEGA Central Alberta Branch member and lead organizer of the event, said he hoped to create a passion for engineering and geoscience in the kids.

“These students may not know what an engineer or a geoscientist does,” he said in a media release. “This event highlights the types of problems we get to solve and how innovative and creative we get to be when coming up with these solutions. It showcases how our work improves the lives of people in our communities. Hopefully this inspires some to become the engineers and geoscientists of tomorrow.”

The students used their knowledge and skills to solve a mystery challenge presented to them at the event and received gold, silver, bronze, or innovator awards. They were put into teams with a mix of different Grades on each squad.

Martinez said the real award was providing the student with the opportunity to see themselves as capable innovators.

“This event takes interactive learning outside of the classroom—the students get to try out so many aspects of engineering and geoscience, including designing, creating, and testing their solutions that solve a problem for people in their community, while working as a team, mirroring the experiences we have as professionals in these fields.”

The APEGA Science Olympics events are held across Alberta each year.
