Blackfalds approves tax rates for 2026

Apr 29, 2026 | 4:44 PM

Blackfalds town council has approved its 2026 tax rates.

Second and third readings were given at the April 28 regular meeting of council, which approved a 2.20 per cent tax increase for residents.

Residents will also see an additional increase, roughly $8.17/month, based on the average assessment value, related to the provincial Education Property Tax requisition, which has risen by 14 per cent in 2026, to fund school operations.

Under provincial regulation, the Town of Blackfalds is required to collect both the Education Property Tax requisition as well as the Seniors Requisition on behalf of the province, and does not set the rates.

“Out of every dollar we collect from residents, we send almost 26 per cent to the province for education, 0.6 per cent for seniors requisition, and we save around 74 per cent for municipal operations,” said Justin de Bresser, director of corporate services.

Mayor Laura Svab thanked administration for their efforts in crafting the budget.

“I want to thank administration for the work they’ve done preparing this bylaw. We recognize that a tax increase is necessary to sustain growth and address rising costs, but it’s also important to keep the tax increase lower and more affordable for residents,” Svab remarked.

“We’d like to emphasize that the provincial increases will be a large portion of the overall increase.”

Property tax notices will be sent out during the first week of May, along with a 2026 Alberta School Requisition facts and information insert.
