‘Choir Kids’ RDSO concerts return April 27 and May 4

Apr 15, 2026 | 12:12 PM

Red Deer Symphony Orchestra is back with its annual Choir Kids shows, April 27 and May 4 at the Memorial Centre.

In these shows, choir kids from around central Alberta will perform alongside the older members of the RDSO.

“For many students, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Kati Ramsden, vice principal at Mattie McCullough Elementary. “To hear their voices supported by a full orchestra is something they’ll never forget.”

Everyone involved plans months ahead for these events, with choirs sharing their selected pieces with RDSO Music Director and Maestro Claude Lapalme.

Lapalme then creates custom orchestral arrangements which students spend weeks rehearsing.

“This has become a meaningful collaboration for both students and music educators,” adds Ramsden.

“It’s a chance to connect across schools and create something really impactful together. Having an orchestra in our community is something special. Events like this help bring people together and make the arts more approachable for everyone.”

There are two performances each day, at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Each runs 45 minutes.

Performance 1: St. Martin de Porres, Beacon Hill, Iron Ridge

Performance 2: Don Campbell, Mattie McCullough, Gateway Christian

Performance 3: Father Henri Voisin, Steffie Woima, Annie L. Gaetz

Performance 4: Barrie Wilson, West Park, Mountview, Lacombe Upper
