Muddy conditions mean railway warning from Maskwacis RCMP

Maskwacis RCMP is urging the public to keep off-highway vehicles clear of railway tracks.

This is particularly important during spring when ground surfaces are often soft and unstable.

Muddy terrain increases the risk of a vehicle becoming stuck, thereby creating a serious safety hazard.

“Railway tracks and surrounding areas are not designed for recreational vehicle use,” the detachment says in a release.

“Trains require significant time and distance to stop and cannot quickly respond to unexpected obstacles on or near the tracks. Any obstruction can pose a risk to public safety and may also disrupt rail operations.”

Maskwacis RCMP encourages all OHV users to:

• Avoid travelling on or near railway tracks and rail corridors
• Be aware of changing ground conditions that can lead to vehicles becoming stuck
• Plan routes in safe, designated areas away from rail infrastructure
• Never attempt to cross tracks except at designated crossings

The public, everywhere, is also reminded that railway property is restricted and trespassing can result in enforcement action.
