A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a Red Deer woman charged in a fatal crash north of the city last year, that claimed the life of a Blackfalds man.

Nakita Pike, 19, is scheduled to find out in Red Deer Court of Justice from Feb. 9-10, 2027, if her case has enough evidence to go to trial.

She’s charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death and operate motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg of alcohol in 100 mL of blood causing death.

It was shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 30, 2025, when Red Deer RCMP received a report of a serious two-vehicle collision between an SUV and motorcycle on Highway 2A, just north of Red Deer.

Upon arrival, Mounties say the driver of the motorcycle, 48-year-old Michael (Aaron) Caywood, of Blackfalds, was deceased. The driver of the SUV, an 18-year-old female resident of Red Deer, was taken to hospital with injuries.

RCMP remained on scene for several hours conducting an investigation to determine a cause.

On Oct. 23, 2025, Red Deer RCMP laid charges in connection with the crash, with assistance from the Alberta RCMP Collision Reconstructionist.

Their investigation determined the SUV was travelling northbound on Highway 2A north of Red Deer, when it crossed the centre line, colliding with the southbound motorcycle.
