Surprise charges

Sylvan Lakers speak out following alleged credit card fraud by local business

The victims of alleged credit card fraud are calling on the owner of a Sylvan Lake-based landscaping company to be charged.

Multiple posts on Sylvan Lake Rant and Raves, a Facebook group, have accused Fancy Plants Landscaping owner Jason Sheptycki of charging thousands of dollars to their credit cards after they’ve already paid for his services.

rdnewsNOW has reached out to Sheptycki multiple times by phone since Thursday, but has not been able to make contact.

RCMP Cpl. Gina Slaney confirmed that Sylvan Lake RCMP are investigating fraud regarding unlawful charges to credit cards after receiving numerous complaints from victims on Wednesday. However, police were unable to confirm the name of the business being investigated.

No charges have been laid at this time.

Sylvan Lake resident Jackie Wildeman said the local business charged over $7,600 to her credit card.

While at home earlier this week, she noticed the charge on her account, which was not authorized by her. She had done previous business with Fancy Plants and paid her invoice.

She was shocked by the charge, but after talking with her credit card company, the amount charged was reimbursed. However, after speaking with some of the other victims, she said some of them haven’t been as lucky.

“I’m hoping he is charged,” she said. “Fraud over $5,000 is illegal, and what he did is illegal.”

Babette Baskerville, a Sylvan Lake resident, explained, she received a charge on her credit card for $6,700 from Fancy Plants.

She got work done at her home by the business both last year and this year, and paid for both services. However, earlier this week, she received a receipt from the business charging her the same amount she had previously paid.

She has yet to be reimbursed and explained, since the business has two credit cards on file, she may have to cancel both.

“I phoned him and his voicemail was full, so I emailed him and received no response. I even went to his house after work and no one answered the door,” she said.

“I’ve had a million messages from other victims since my post on Facebook… I’ve talked to all of his workers and they’re all frustrated with him as much as I was. In the end, my yard got done. There’s others who didn’t get their yards done, and they paid. They’re going to small claims court at this point… I just hope everyone gets their money back.”
