City of Red Deer says voting process may take slightly longer at polls

Oct 20, 2025 | 10:55 AM

Red Deer residents heading to the polls on election day are encouraged to allow for a little extra time.

The City of Red Deer says voting may take longer this year because of the use of Alberta’s new permanent elector registry

Each municipality, including Red Deer, are required to provide updated voter information to the provincial government after the election.

This means voters are going to be asked to complete an elector register form at the voting station even if they’re registered to vote. As a result, voters might be at the station slightly longer than anticipated.

Once the registry information has been updated, officials say all the forms will be securely shredded.

“We appreciate voters’ patience as our election teams work to ensure every eligible voter can cast their ballot accurately and securely,” the city stated in a media release.

Voters typically complete their vote in approximately 10 minutes and to help avoid lineups, voters can visit Red Deer Elections website to check real-time wait times at each voting station.

Anyone who arrives at a polling station and joins a line before 8 p.m. will be able to vote.
