Red Deer Tennis Club hosting 12th annual memorial tournament Sept. 27

The Red Deer Tennis Club is set to host its 12th annual Thelma Smith Memorial Tournament.

The competition goes Sept. 27 at the downtown tennis courts, with it honouring past members who’ve passed away.

The tournament is open to all skill levels, says Mary Gardiner, longtime club and board member.

This year, being added to the club’s Memorial Wall, will be Cyril Curran and Rick Petersen, Gardiner shares.

“Thelma Smith, a longtime Red Deer player, left a legacy worth remembering,” she says. “She was passionate about tennis and was very involved in the tennis club. She was president twice and participated in all events.”

Interested competitors sign up as individuals, and are paired with a partner for competition on the day of. The winning team gets their names engraved on a plaque and receives a free lesson from a club pro.

The tournament follows up the club recently celebrating its 125th anniversary.
