Red Deer and area experienced significant amounts of rain on Monday.

Red Deer received 27.6 millimetres of rain, which was less than expected by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), who issued a rainfall warning Sunday calling for 50 to 70 mm. Lacombe was close behind with 20.9 millimetres of rain.

Christy Climenhaga, a spokesperson with ECCC, said the highest rainfall amounts were in the Foothills where 30 to 45 mm of precipitation fell.

Meanwhile, Nordegg saw 45.5 mm of rain, followed by Rocky Mountain House with 30.1 mm. The further south you went towards Calgary, amounts dropped significantly with only 14.9 millimetres there.

Climenhaga explained it will be an unsettled week in terms of rainfall for the province but Wednesday could bring thunderstorm activity and some showers.

“There will be more showery kind of weather over the next couple of days,” she said. “There’s a chance of some more precipitation, although not quite as organized as we saw with this last system.”

In Red Deer, the heaviest amounts of rainfall typically happen in May, June, July, and August. June is usually the wettest month in the area.

“On average when we look at the past 30 year you get generally about 97.7 millimetres,” she added. “This is when precipitation begins to ramp up.”
