Amendments have been made to the plan for the development of the new fire station in Lacombe to be built along Woodland Drive.

This week Lacombe city council approved the amendments to the North Area Structure Plan (NASP).

There are two sections of the NASP that required amendments, these being Section 5.7.3 and 5.7.4 under Community and Social Facilities:

Administration opposed to delete Section 5.7.3 which states, “No emergency service facilities have been planned for the area.” It is now their intent to establish a fire station within the planned area.

They also changed Section 5.7.4 which says, “The city has adopted a cemetery master plan which designates the east of the cemetery as future cemetery lands.”

In now reads, “The City has adopted a cemetery master plan which designates lands the east of the cemetery as future cemetery lands as well as other institutional lands.”

“These administrative changes help pave the way for our community’s new fire station,” said Mayor Grant Creasey, in a media release.

“It is important for the city to go through these steps to ensure this critical infrastructure can serve our residents for years to come. Council looks forward to celebrating the opening of this facility with all of our stakeholders in the near future.”

Where the fire station will be built along Woodland Drive will not affect existing cemetery plots. The land is currently being used as a baseball diamond. The north and east diamonds will be unaffected by the future station.

Nearly 20 properties were considered, with seven receiving detailed analysis. The included a stakeholder survey, which indicated that 87 per cent selected this location as their first choice.

Multiple factors guided the selection process for each location including response time, safe location, access to major roadways, residential impact, land availability, and future development impacts.

The city also hopes to address residents’ concerns about lights and sirens by implementing a new Standard Operating Guideline for the Lacombe Fire Department, which will be drafted to ensure that emergency equipment abides by the Traffic Safety Act and is only used when required during nighttime hours.
