One of five people charged in a crash involving a vehicle fleeing police in Wetaskiwin that seriously injured a motorist, has been found not guilty.

Cherise Dana Crane, 27, was found not guilty on all five counts against her following her trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on April 14, 2025.

Crane was originally charged with possession of stolen property over $5000, flight from police, possession of a firearm at unauthorized place, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, and unauthorized possession of a restricted weapon.

Crane and co-accused Richard Stanley Soosay, 32, of Maskwacis, were previously scheduled for trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Oct. 23, 2023, with Crane previously scheduled for sentencing on Jan. 26, 2024.

However, Soosay was sentenced earlier on July 18, 2023, after being convicted on counts of possession of property over $5000, dangerous operation causing bodily harm, and fail to comply with a release order. He was sentenced to 10 months in jail, 12 months of probation, a two-year license suspension, and ordered to pay $60,011.21 in restitution.

Three other co-accused saw their counts withdrawn in 2023.

It was on Jan. 5, 2023, when Wetaskiwin RCMP say they received a report of an individual in the city with a firearm on 37a Ave. As officers arrived, they say the suspect entered a Ford F150 pickup and fled.

Officers say they initially attempted to stop the vehicle; however, due to the dangerous driving and speed, they disengaged and did not pursue any further.

Shortly after, the vehicle collided with a Chevy Equinox at the intersection of 56 St. and 40 Ave. The driver of the Equinox, a 61-year-old male, received serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

RCMP arrested six occupants of the Ford F150, which had been reported stolen on Dec. 31, 2022. A replica handgun was also seized.

As a result of the investigation, five individuals were charged.
