Red Deer RCMP reminds public of daylight savings time safety considerations

Mar 7, 2025 | 1:59 PM

The Red Deer RCMP are reminding residents of a number of important safety precautions heading into Daylight Savings Time this weekend.

Police say the time change can affect home security, and visibility on the roads, among other things.

Mounties say residents should use the time change to make sure smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are up-to-date and working properly. Police say these devices play an important role in overall home safety.

With the sunrise and sunset happening at different times, visibility on the roads could be affected. Police say motorists should be cautious, especially during the first week of the time change.

RCMP further note, the change in daylight hours can also make it difficult to see pedestrians and cyclists, especially early in the morning and afternoon. Drivers should be extra alert.

Police also say as the public engages in outdoor activities more often, it’s important to remember to lock doors and windows when leaving home as well as your vehicle.

RCMP say the public should, and are welcome to report any suspicious activity to police.
