Red Deer’s Parks and Public Works ahead of schedule in clearing weekend snowfall

Nov 25, 2024 | 11:23 AM

You could say it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in central Alberta after a weekend of snowfall continued from Nov. 22-24.

Parks and Public Works Manager Greg Sikora said Red Deer received about 22 centimetres of snow.

He added that City plow operations are working 24/7 and are ahead of schedule in addressing the dump, with 80 per cent of red plow routes complete after 1.5 days of service — well ahead of the three day target.

“It’s a good start to the winter, and we’re here as service providers to the City of Red Deer. We always look for suggestions on how we can do better, but I think we got a good jump on this year,” said Sikora.

Purple routes, which include hills, bridges, and high-collision intersections, are fully complete. Sikora added that for the next three nights, select areas downtown are set to be cleared.

Residents experiencing traction, mobility, or other plowing-related issues are encouraged to call Public Works at 403-342-8238 or use the City’s Report a Problem portal.

Sikora also asks that drivers give heavy equipment operators generous distance on the road as they can have blind spots.

Red Deer wasn’t the only central Alberta municipality to be transformed into a winter wonderland.

According to a summary issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada, as of 10 a.m. yesterday, the Village of Alix had a notable 20 centimetres of snow.

The City of Lacombe saw about half as much at 11 centimetres.
