Accused in 2021 Red Deer carjacking gets 15.5 months in jail

Oct 25, 2024 | 1:31 PM

A Lacombe man accused in a July 2021 Red Deer carjacking has been sentenced to 15.5 months of jail.

Quinten Meyer was initially charged with armed robbery, flight from police, operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited, mischief under $5,000 and resisting a peace officer.

The robbery charge was dropped in 2022 and the charge of operation while prohibited was withdrawn at his recent sentencing on Oct. 18, according to court records.

RCMP originally said it was just before 11 p.m. on July 11, 2021 when members responded to a report of an armed robbery of a motor vehicle near Red Deer Regional Hospital.

Mounties alleged that a male suspect had approached a female sitting in her car, displayed a weapon, and ordered the woman to exit the vehicle.

A half hour later, police said they saw a vehicle in or near Innisfail matching the description of the one stolen from Red Deer. A traffic stop was initiated, but the suspect was said to have fled.

The suspect was ultimately stopped in the vehicle at 50 Street and 42 Avenue in Innisfail, and arrested without incident. The vehicle owner was not harmed.

Meyer initially had a trial in June 2022, and was finally set to be sentenced in May 2024 after a warrant had been out for his arrest. A mix-up on process led Meyer requiring a new trial, which took place Oct. 18, 2024, in Red Deer.
