A Red Deer man charged in a fatal crash in Calgary nearly two years ago, has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Tyson Tyler Giroux, 31, was sentenced in Calgary Court of Justice Oct. 22, 2024, after pleading guilty in January of this year to dangerous operation causing death. He was also given a three-year driving prohibition and 10-year firearms ban, while two other counts were withdrawn.

It was about 3:15 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, 2022, when members of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) responded to reports of a serious two-vehicle collision in the southbound lanes of Deerfoot Trail, near 32 Avenue NE.

“Upon arrival, we located a severely damaged car and a 2009 Ford F-150 pickup truck with significant front-end damage. Moments later, we discovered a lone occupant in the driver’s seat of the car, who was subsequently declared deceased at the scene,” police said at the time. “The driver of the Ford F-150 truck was located in the vehicle and determined to have sustained minor injuries.”
