December 2021 Incident

Red Deer man sentenced in local homicide

Dec 8, 2023 | 4:12 PM

A two-year Conditional Sentence Order (CSO) has been given to a local man convicted in a Red Deer homicide two years ago.

Benjamin William Rabbit, 29, of Red Deer, was convicted on a charge of manslaughter and sentenced in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench on Dec. 8, 2023. He was also given three years probation and a 10-year firearms prohibition.

The sentence follows a two-week jury trial held in Red Deer in October.

Rabbit was charged in relation to the death of another Red Deer man, and was initially charged with one count of second-degree murder.

It was on Dec. 29, 2021, when Red Deer RCMP responded to a homicide at an apartment on 55 Street in Red Deer. Upon arrival, police located a deceased 66-year-old resident.

Mounties say a suspect was immediately taken into custody and brought back to the Red Deer detachment, further noting the suspect and the deceased were both known to each other.
