Red Deer region sees rise in unemployment rate in October

The Red Deer region saw a rise in its unemployment rate last month, currently giving it the highest jobless rate of any economic region in the province.

According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the Red Deer region’s jobless rate was 7.4 per cent last month, up from 6.7 per cent in September and 5.6 per cent in October 2022.

That compares with a current unemployment rate of 5.7 per cent in the Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake region, 5.6 per cent in Edmonton, 5.5 per cent in Calgary, 5.1 per cent in Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River, 4.9 per cent in Lethbridge-Medicine Hat, and 3.3 per cent in the Camrose-Drumheller region.

Provincially, Alberta’s unemployment rate was 5.8 per cent in October, up from 5.7 per cent in September, and 5.4 per cent in the same month last year.

Alberta Labour Force Statistics for October 2023 also show the number of unemployed workers rising from 147,000 in September to 152,100 in October.

Elsewhere, the number of people employed across the province also rose from 2,449,300 in September to 2,487,000 in October, while the overall labour force in Alberta rose from 2,596,200 in September to 2,639,100 in October.

The national unemployment rate, meantime, rose from 5.5 per cent in September to 5.7 per cent in October. That’s up from 5.2 per cent in October 2022.
