Seven-year prison sentence for man convicted in fatal central Alberta shooting

Oct 4, 2023 | 2:52 PM

A seven-year prison sentence has been handed down to a central Alberta man charged in a fatal shooting on the Sunchild First Nation nearly three years ago.

Keean Frencheater, 26, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Oct. 2, 2023, after being convicted on one count of manslaughter/use of firearm.

He had a global sentence imposed of 2,555 days imprisonment, less 1,030 days pre-trial custody, with enhanced time credit at a 1.5 times basis, equaling 1,545 days.

Frencheater, however, is to serve a total of 1,010 days imprisonment commencing Oct. 3, 2023 (2 years, 9 months). He was also given a firearms prohibition.

Frencheater was initially charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 39-year-old Jason Lagrelle on Dec. 6, 2020. That charge was withdrawn though on Aug. 8, 2022.

Rocky Mountain House RCMP launched an investigation following the shooting outside a residence on the Sunchild First Nation.

Mounties say the victim was declared deceased on scene, with the Major Crimes Unit deployed to take over the investigation.

A suspect vehicle was later located on the reserve and a residence contained, along with help from the Emergency Response Team. Police say the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.
