Jury trial scheduled for central Alberta man charged in fatal shooting

A three week jury trial has been scheduled for a man charged in a fatal shooting on the Sunchild First Nation two years ago.

Keean Frencheater, 26, of the Sunchild First Nation, is scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench from June 12-30, 2023, following a preliminary hearing held in Red Deer on Aug. 4, 2022.

Frencheater is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 39-year-old Jason Lagrelle on Dec. 6, 2020.

That’s when Rocky Mountain House RCMP launched an investigation into a shooting outside a residence on the Sunchild First Nation.

Mounties say the victim was declared deceased on scene, with the Major Crimes Unit deployed to take over the investigation.

A suspect vehicle was later located on the reserve and a residence contained, along with help from the Emergency Response Team. Police say the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.
