Sentencing scheduled this fall in central Alberta homicide

Jul 17, 2023 | 1:51 PM

Sentencing is due to take place this fall for a man charged in a fatal shooting on the Sunchild First Nation two and-a-half years ago.

Keean Frencheater, 26, is scheduled for sentencing in Red Deer Court of King’s Bench on Oct. 2, 2023. The date was set following a three-week jury trial held in Red Deer last month.

Frencheater is charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 39-year-old Jason Lagrelle on Dec. 6, 2020.

That’s when Rocky Mountain House RCMP launched an investigation into a shooting outside a residence on the Sunchild First Nation.

Mounties say the victim was declared deceased on scene, with the Major Crimes Unit deployed to take over the investigation.

A suspect vehicle was later located on the reserve and a residence contained, along with help from the Emergency Response Team. Police say the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody.
