24th World Petroleum Congress underway in Calgary

Sep 18, 2023 | 1:02 PM

Hundreds of executives and government officials from oil-producing nations around the world are gathered in Calgary this week for the 24th World Petroleum Congress.

The event, which occurs every three years and has not been held in Canada since 2000, runs amid the backdrop of growing global pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Oil prices, meanwhile, topped US$90 a barrel last week for the first time since November last year.

The Congress is led by W-P-C Energy, which is an organization of nearly 65 member countries from around the world.

Minister of Energy and Minerals Brian Jean, meantime, issued the following statement about the 24th World Petroleum Congress being held in Calgary Sept. 17-21:

“As Alberta’s minister of energy and minerals, I am proud to welcome the World Petroleum Congress to Calgary. Alberta’s government warmly welcomes the participating delegates from around the world to this important global conference, which is held every three years.

“Alberta is Canada’s energy province. Oil and gas will continue to be a major part of the world’s energy mix for decades to come. I believe more than ever that our province can help shape the global energy future and that is why I am delighted that we will be able to host so many global energy leaders in Calgary. We all know the importance of reaching carbon neutrality and we are all running as fast as we can to get there. Alberta is committed to cutting emissions while keeping energy secure and affordable.

“Alberta’s energy sector is leading the way. More than 11.5 million tonnes of CO2 have already been safely stored underground in Alberta carbon capture projects. Our oil and gas industry has invested billions in emissions reduction and is actively commercializing their technologies across the province. Our hydrogen, natural gas, critical mineral, petrochemical and renewable energy opportunities all continue to attract attention and investment.

“Alberta is future-focused. We are creating the conditions for a diverse energy mix through technological innovation and our greatest resource, our people, who have the expertise and skills to support global demand for energy and emerging technologies.

“Through strong collaboration and meaningful partnerships, Alberta will continue to be an energy leader on the world stage. We will continue to be a reliable partner for others looking to build a low-carbon energy future and achieve better environmental outcomes. Our province welcomes any and all partnerships to develop the new infrastructure and supply chains needed to support future energy technologies. An investment in Alberta energy is an investment in the world’s energy future.

“Great things are happening here right now, and I can assure you this momentum will continue. I look forward to attending the conference, participating on discussion panels and engaging with as many of the delegates as I can over the next few days.”

Nagwan Al-Guneid, Alberta NDP Energy & Climate Critic for Electricity, Utilities & Renewables, and Kathleen Ganley, Alberta NDP Energy & Climate Critic NDP Energy & Climate Critic for Oil and Gas, Hydrogen and Minerals issued the following statement while attending the World Petroleum Congress:

“Alberta is a proven global energy leader. It is incredible to welcome the world here to talk about the future of our industry.

“We can continue to lead in all forms of energy development, spurring the creation of good-paying jobs for generations to come. Unfortunately, the ongoing UCP moratorium on renewable energy continues to threaten up to $33 billion in new investment and the creation of 24,000 jobs. This UCP policy sends all the wrong signals to the market at a time when the world is looking to Alberta to lead. The Premier should put an end to the moratorium today.

“We need dedicated commitment and clear timelines for supporting carbon capture from both the federal and provincial governments. The UCP Government has promised more details in a few months but with the Inflation Reduction Act already driving investment south of the border we must move faster. The federal government must follow through with contracts for differences this fall. Both levels of government must focus on the future and do better to support these game-changing projects

“Let’s tell the world Alberta is open for business and investment, and that we can make urgent progress on climate change, that we can achieve a net-zero future and continue to be a world leader in energy development.”
