It’s three-and-a-half years in jail and a five-year license suspension for a Red Deer man charged in a fatal motor vehicle collision that claimed the life of a pedestrian nearly two years ago.

Melvin Gerald Will, 85, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Aug, 18, 2023, after being convicted on one count of failure or refusal to comply with demand-accident resulting in death.

The sentence followed Will’s trial in Red Deer Court of Justice on Feb. 8, 2023.

It was on Sept. 14, 2021, at 12:00 p.m., when Red Deer RCMP responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian located at 48 Street and 52 Avenue. Upon police arrival, Red Deer Emergency Services were on scene providing medical assistance to the pedestrian.

Mounties said their preliminary investigation revealed that a truck was heading southbound on 52 Avenue. However, as the truck turned eastbound onto 48 Street, a pedestrian was struck in the crosswalk.

Medical treatment was provided to the pedestrian; however, a 68-year-old woman from Red Deer was declared deceased at the scene. Police said the identity of the deceased would not be released.

Red Deer RCMP arrested an 83-year-old male driver of the truck for failing to provide a breath sample.

The road was closed for approximately two hours while police conducted their investigation.
