Preliminary hearing scheduled for woman charged in alleged kidnapping with firearm incident

Jun 12, 2023 | 10:55 AM

One of three people charged in an alleged kidnapping with a firearm incident in central Alberta last summer is due to find out this fall if her case has enough evidence to go to trial.

Alexandra Louise Rain, 25, of the Maskwacis area, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Sept. 25, 2023.

Rain is charged with kidnapping with a firearm, forcible confinement, robbery, uttering threats, and assault.

It was on Saturday, August 13, 2022, when Maskwacis RCMP responded to a call for service on the Samson Cree Nation where a female reported being kidnapped by multiple individuals and held against her will.

Mounties say the female was forced into a vehicle, threatened with her life, and a firearm was held to her head. After some time, the female was able to break free from being restrained and fled to safety. Police say the female was treated for minor injuries and was expected to make a full recovery.

As the investigation unfolded, police say they were able to quickly identify three suspects and take two into custody. The third suspect was later arrested and charged.

One individual charged, Richard Stanley Soosay, 31, of the Samson Cree Nation, was sentenced to 90 days in jail and given a lifetime firearms prohibition on May 15, 2023, after being convicted on one count of possession of a prohibited firearm.

Meantime, a second co-accused, Amy Natasha Okeymow, 38, of the Samson Cree Nation, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on July 14, 2023, to find out if her case has enough evidence to go to trial.
