Central Albertans earn top honours for their mad skills

May 9, 2023 | 1:13 PM

Several central Alberta students recently earned top marks for their mad skills.

Red Deer Polytechnic apprentices earned five medals, including two gold, two silver and one bronze, at the Skills Canada Alberta competition held May 3-4 in Edmonton.

Jared Quast (Sprinkler Systems Installer) and Ben Rainforth (Welding) were the top achievers from the Polytechnic, both winning gold medals. Quast and Rainforth will represent Red Deer Polytechnic and Team Alberta at the Skills Canada National Competition, which will take place in Winnipeg May 25-26.

Gold medalists at the National competition will be named to Team Canada and will compete on the international stage. The 47th WorldSkills Competition will be held in Lyon, France September 10-15, 2024.

Fellow RDPers Jared Gamble (Plumbing) and Joseph Saunderson (Sprinkler Systems Installer) won silver in their respective trades. Ryley Bakken (Steamfitter/Pipefitter) earned bronze.

“These recent achievements reinforce the high-quality experiences available to apprentices at Red Deer Polytechnic and throughout the region,” says Joel Gingrich, Dean of School of Education and Trades. “Along with receiving enhanced education, training and support from RDP instructors, Skills Coaches and technicians, our apprentices receive industry-relevant opportunities from our region’s employers. This support and collaboration prepare our apprentices to excel in their fields.”

Students from Chinook’s Edge School Division also excelled at the Edmonton event.

Johan Eriksson (Carpentry), a Grade 10 Didsbury High School student, earned silver, and Travis Lorenz (Carpentry), a Grade 11 at H.J. Cody High School in Sylvan Lake, earned bronze. Davin Garrow (Carpentry), a Grade 11 student from H.J. Cody, also participated, placing seventh.

Scott Etienne, Career and Technology Studies (CTS) teacher, Didsbury High School, said, “Johan is only in Grade 10 and this well earned provincial silver medal will give him impetus to pursue his goals in school and for the rest of his life.”

Other local high school students to medal included Jaden Chornomydz (Graphic Design-bronze), who attends Notre Dame in Red Deer, and Notre Dame’s Mack Gould (Hairstyling Junior-silver). Mary Catherine Sorensen (Job Skills Demonstration-bronze), also attends Notre Dame.

Ponoka Secondary’s Jake Sheppard (Welding-silver) also had success.

Elsewhere, Chinook’s Edge bus drivers swept the podium at the recent Central Alberta Bus Road-eo on May 6, held at Red Deer’s Notre Dame Secondary.
