Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Red Deer and area

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Red Deer and area.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Officials say there is also a risk of a tornado and that severe thunderstorms will develop this afternoon and persist through the evening.

“Be prepared for severe weather. If threatening weather approaches, take cover in a basement or interior room. If outside, protect yourself from flying debris and hail,” ECCC said in the watch. “Strong wind gusts can damage trees, buildings and overturn vehicles. Large hail can also cause significant damage and injury.”
