May 5, 2023 | 3:14 PM

Central Sport will be presenting their Recognition and Celebration Awards to athletes, teams, and local sport organizations this year at Xplore Sport Day.

Presented by the City of Red Deer on May 13, the annual sports event offers residents of all ages opportunities to try out a variety of sport and recreation activities available in the city.

Central Sport says they previously planned to set their own Recognition and Celebration event for early May to present awards in honour of accomplishments from 2022. However, feedback from deliberations with the City and local sport organizations lead to the decision to present the awards at Xplore Sport Day.

“With Central Sport’s past participation in Xplore Sport Day, this felt like a natural progression to showcase our remarkable non-profit organization to a broader audience of central Alberta residents and celebrate the accomplishments of our local athletes, volunteers, teams, and local sport organizations together,” said Trevor Thomas, Chief Executive Officer of Central Sport.

The organization says that winners have already been chosen and contacted for the following categories:

  • Youth Athlete of the Year
  • Team of the Year
  • LSO Volunteer Recognition (Certificates)
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Kendall Dunkle Memorial Award – Minor Coach of the Year
  • Lifetime Sport Achievement

Further information and an award schedule will be available on the Central Sport website.

Xplore Sport Day takes place on Saturday, May 13 in Capstone (Canada 150 Square) from
9 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Formed as a legacy of the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, Central Sport says they are committed to connecting central Alberta sport to build on the momentum created by the Games and position the region as a leader in sport.
